Total renovation of terraced house, Catherine Corti + Stefan Hunziker, Zurich

The terraced house in the almost 100-year-old workers’ housing estate in Zurich was taken over in its original condition and carefully but comprehensively renovated. The modernization was carried out with great care in order to preserve the historical character of the building. The kitchen and bathroom were generously extended, and the existing floors were restored and added in keeping with the style, while the previously unheated attic was made liveable and converted into valuable living space. Four precisely positioned, large-format skylights flood the newly created space with daylight and open up views of Uetliberg’s forests on one side and the city skyline on the other. In conjunction with the existing building materials, versatile, contemporary rooms have been created – in keeping with the restrained architectural language of the building.
